Educator and Independent Fit Minds® Coach
My name is Julie Johnson. I have been working as a teacher for the last 7 years in Alpharetta, GA. Prior to this I was a stay at home mom raising my children, and taught for 10 years before that for a total of 17+ years in education. I have dual degrees in Communication and Education. I have always known my calling was to make a positive impact on other people's lives. I love building relationships with my students and knowing I help them grow to be the very best they can be. But my passion for educating doesn't stop there! While I have a heart for the young in life, I am equally drawn to senior adults. So when the opportunity presented itself to combine my love of educating and making a positive impact on the lives of adults too, I jumped at the chance! When I learned about Fit Minds® and Janet Knupp in Florida, I knew I had to become a part of it. I began my career educating and encouraging the young, and now I want to educate and encourage the "young at heart"! It has already become more than I could have ever imagined!
Americans are living longer than ever before. Therefore, it is more important than ever before, to be sure our longer lives are healthier lives. We don't want to just survive these years we've been given, we want to thrive in them. Years of research on cognitive neuroplasticity shows our brain has the ability to grow and produce new neurons and connections until the day we die. But this won't happen on its own. We have to be intentional to stimulate and exercise our brain long after we retire and before we ever show signs of needing too. Physicians are beginning to embrace it's time to be proactive not just reactive to signs our brains are slowing down.
The Fit Minds® program, which originated in Canada, profoundly impacted Janet and her own mother, who was diagnosed with Lewy Body, a form of dementia. This life altering event led Janet to leave her successful career as a business executive, venture philanthropist and thought leader in education to create and launch Fit Minds® in the United States. Cognitive Stimulation Therapy (CST) is already widely used in the UK, Canada and over 29 countries world wide, but has yet to become the norm in the U.S. Janet's passion and the Fit Minds® program is determined to change this! Why would we not be doing everything possible and available to help our older population and even younger people with brain injuries live their life to the fullest possible?
